"We want people to put value on life experience and living in the moment."
In early 2018, the Eaux Claires Music Festival announced a request for art installation proposals for its festival later that summer.
The organizers of the festival immediately set themselves apart from the rest by presenting a unique concept: A festival with no marketed lineup. This intentional approach encouraged festival goers to embrace their sense of curiosity and adventure.
INSPIRATION AND EXPLORATION
How can an art installation inspire us to live in the moment?
Because a music festival can attract people of all backgrounds and ages, it was important that this idea of feeling present was authentic, universal and resonated with everyone.
Childhood is often characterized by boundless curiosity. Everyday is filled with exploration and countless new experiences to learn and grow.
This led to a series of explorations around spaces, objects, and places that are universal to everyone's childhood.
NARRATIVE
(POP)UP is a floating canopy of balloons set in the forest.
This field of familiar objects fosters a childlike sense of wonder through its repetition in a foreign setting. It invites us all to return to the playground of curiosity and contemplation.
As children, boredom led to daydreaming and creation; we could find inspiration in the everyday. As we grow older, we begin to fill our lives with busyness, soothing our idle moments with meaningless screen-lit distractions.
APPROACH
Heightening one's awareness of the forest's ephemeral character.
The installation consists of 500 large spherical balloons offset with 4' spacing.
From afar, visitors see the balloons as a cloud, carving a space between the trees and the ground. From within, visitors notice the gentle sway of the balloons in the breeze and the dappled light from the sun. As the sun sets, the orbs slowly start to glow from within.
CHALLENGES
- Testing balloons for durability, shape, and color
- Testing rope, methods to tie and secure balloons to the the forest ground
- Determining a system for equal spacing
- Assigning tasks to help inflate, tie and place balloons during install
- Understanding how the installation could adapt to extenuating weather
- Understanding + preparing for how a crowd might engage with the installation
THE RESULT
A dynamic, ephemeral art installation that inspired wonder and delight to all.
After all, how can you see a balloon and not want to touch it?
